3G Network Shutdown
Sunrise is phasing out its outdated 3G mobile technology to make way for faster, more efficient 4G and 5G networks.
This change is essential to free up capacity and improve energy efficiency, ensuring Lebara customers benefit from a faster and more reliable mobile experience starting from 10th June.
What this means for you:
If you are using a device that only supports 3G technology, you will no longer be able to make calls, send texts, or use mobile data after 10th June. The 3G network will be gradually phased out starting on June 10. From that date onward, 3G coverage will no longer be available nationwide.
This includes:
To continue enjoying uninterrupted mobile services, you must upgrade to a 4G or 5G compatible device as soon as possible.
Most modern devices already support 4G, 5G, and VoLTE, so upgrading is simple and ensures you stay connected without any hassle.
If your device already supports 4G and VoLTE, you’re all set! You won’t be affected by the shutdown and will automatically benefit from an even faster and more reliable network.
As a valued Lebara customer, your satisfaction is our priority. For any 3G questions, call our free dedicated numbers: 0800 733 744 (available from 09:30 to 19:30). Our team is ready to assist you in selecting the right device and preparing for the future.
Sunrise network coverage:
Sunrise covers over 99.9% of the Swiss population with its 4G network and over 99.5% with its 5G network. This means that 4G and 5G coverage is significantly broader than what was previously available with the 3G network.

Questions and Answers
- Voice calls via 3G (including emergency calls)
The mobile-voice-calls service (including emergency calls) will continue to operate via 4G (VoLTE) - Data transmission via 3G
Data will continue to be transmitted via 4G/5G - SMS via 3G
SMS services will continue to operate via 4G. For this to work, the device needs to be VoLTE-capable (exception: 4G is sufficient for devices that just have a data subscription, because it doesn’t require VoLTE) - Circuit-switched data transmission (CSD)
This service with a very low data-transmission rate will no longer be available. Sunrise recommends switching to modern IP-based technologies.
Why is the 3G network being switched off from June 10th?
The 3G network is outdated and inefficient compared to modern 4G and 5G technologies. Switching it off allows us to free up resources, improve energy efficiency, and provide faster, more reliable mobile services.
Is Sunrise the only carrier switching off 3G?
No, all Swiss providers are gradually shutting down their 3G networks. While the timing may vary, 3G will eventually be phased out completely across Switzerland.
Which devices/phones are affected?
Any devices/phones that do not support 4G. In addition, any devices that are used for voice calls and support 4G but not VoLTE.
Does my device support VoLTE?
Most devices made in 2018 or later support VoLTE. To check, look for the 4G/5G icon during a call. If it disappears, your device may not support VoLTE. For assistance, visit our VoLTE support page or visit Lebara shop.
Which services will be shut down?
Will 3G still work in some areas from June 10th?
